Choosing the Wedding Ring: Gold, Silver, or Platinum?

Choosing the wedding ring can be a big burden. It’s an item that should last forever, never tarnishing, and the symbol of an eternal lifetime. Couples travel to the jewelry store looking for the rings that will suit personal taste until they hear a few words out of the jewelers mouth, words that are a bit technical, and feel lost. What type of metal is the best? If you’re unsure, here are some descriptions of the three most popular choices of today.

Gold Wedding Rings

Gold is the most popular choice, and for good reason. Gold wedding rings offer great durability without sacrificing beauty, luster, quality, and color. Most couples choose 14 karat gold because it contains more than 50% of real gold, a whole 58.5% of gold and only 41.5% of other metals. Gold is also available in yellow gold or white gold, giving a couple options especially when a lighter white similar to a silver/platinum appearance is desired. And gold is less expensive than platinum.

Platinum Wedding Rings

Platinum is by far a superior, durable substance, and a wedding ring made from platinum will by far stand the ultimate test of time … for the right price. Platinum is expensive because it’s the most precious of all metals, 85%-95% pure with a rating of ‘platinum 950’ the most purest in the jewelry industry, it’s thirty times rarer than gold, platinum resists tarnish, and it’s purity makes it hypoallergenic, an obvious choice for anyone with sensitivities.

Silver Wedding Rings

Couples on a strict budget may choose silver wedding rings because among all of the metals, silver is the least expensive but it does come with a price. Opting for a low price, end with low quality. Silver is actually prone to tarnish, discoloration and it’s a very soft metal making silver wedding rings less likely to withstand the test of time. Choosing a wedding ring is hard enough, but when you know how far your buck will go, you’ll choose the right one for you and yours.
