A Bit About the Movie

Annie (Kristen Wiig) and Lillian (Maya Rudolph) are best friends forever and Annie is to be the Maid of Honor at Maya’s wedding. Annie is going through a really bad time in her life – she has been dumped by her boyfriend, her bakery has had to close down and she has to take up a job at a jewelry store, she is going broke as she manages to lose her job too, she shares accommodation with a weird brother-sister duo who kick her out eventually and she has to put up at her mother’s, she drives a car that is a wreck and to add to her woes, her best friend has another friend Helen (Rose Byrne)- a picture perfect, rich girl who is extremely possessive about her own relationship with the bride.

How Annie goes crazy because of her troubles and her constant conflicts with Helen and drives the entire pre-wedding planning upside down is what the movie’s all about. Annie creates a scene in the flight to Las Vegas where the girls are going for their Bachelorette party that results in a total cancellation of the party and Maya’s deciding to choose Helen as the Maid of Honor instead. Helen deftly ‘steals’ all of Annie’s inside knowledge about what Maya really likes and dislikes and her ideas for the Bridal shower and plans an opulent, exaggerated version of them herself. This outrages Annie further and she completely loses it at the shower destroying everything around her like a mad woman. That is the last straw for Maya and she kicks Annie out of her wedding for good.

All the while that this is happening, Annie befriends an Officer (Chris O’Dowd) and manages to upset him too. The other bridesmaids, notably Megan (Melissa McCarthy) who is the groom’s sister add to the hilarious riot with their own histrionics turning the movie into something of a female version of ‘The Hangover’. Unlike ‘The Hangover’, Bridesmaids does have a tiny little romance angle (Wiig-O’Dowd) but is, otherwise, a pure comedy girls would love to watch together.
