Take it from me, choosing the right flowers for that special day is a big deal. I know this because my best friend’s sister owns a flower shop and she’s constantly complaining about last minute changes.

But that’s okay! Here are a few tips straight from the horse’s mouth to help any bride choose the right flowers the first time.

1. Brides should meet with the florist alone. Often times other visitors sway the bride, the bride orders the flowers and calls back later to say she should have trusted her own judgment.

2. Bring a color/fabric palette or list. Consider what’s important, the colors and the textures, arrangement, bouquets and for brides on a budget, it’s a good idea to ask the florist for any substitutions/suggestions.

3. Brides should take the season into consideration. Roses in the middle of December are more costly than easy to get poinsettias!

4. Some brides really don’t know much about flowers. There are lots of inexpensive flowers that are suitable for intimate weddings. Talk to your florist, ask questions, and explore the possibilities before asking for specific flowers unless you’re sure of what you want.

5. Communication is most important. Double check if necessary, but make sure that you and you’re florist are on the same page. The date, time and place of the wedding are the three most important things the florist must have and if anything changes, notify the florist immediately. Never assume the florist isn’t busy or that he or she knows.

All in all, weddings are fun for florists! Florists are people who love floral décor, they should know a lot about flowers and if design is important to you, good florists should be able to either provide photos or referrals.
