Flower Girls' Role in a Wedding, Her Duties and Responsibilities

Flower girls add an innocent charm and warmth to the wedding ceremony. Traditionally the flower girl is meant to walk down the aisle before the ceremony, making way for the bride. Often flower girls look so adorable in a flowing pink dress with ballet slippers that they steal the show, and if there is any tension before the ceremony it instantly disappear.

Flower girls are usually a family member (cousin, nephew, etc.) or a child of a family friend. Imagine the gorgeous site of your niece looking like an angel and walking down the aisle. However there are several things to consider when deciding whether or not to include flower girls in your wedding ceremony.

The ideal age for a flower girl is between the ages of four to eight, but you can also include someone younger between two to three in the ceremony. But it is always better to make an older child who will be able to relish the idea of such a special occasion. Before thinking of a younger flower girl be careful as many wedding have been ruined by screaming and crying of the young ones. This is because they are not use to seeing so many people at one time all-starring at them or probably they are not comfortable in the dress.

Being a flower girl is a very stressful for a young child, carefully consider choosing a child you feel can handle the pressure.

The bride usually chooses attire. Make sure to choose attire that they will be comfortable wearing throughout the wedding and reception. But the money spends on buying the flower girl dress is usually paid by the families. In certain cases the bride’s mother or grandmother either pays the expenses.

Duties Of The Flower Girl

If you have chosen a flower girl who is very young, between the age group of two to three, then her only duty will be to carry a basket with flowers and walk down the aisle in a straight line.

Also a flower girl can spread the petals while walking down the aisle and lay the path for the bride.

The flower girl can escort the ring bearer/pageboy-provided they get along well.

If the flower girl is old enough then she could attend pre-wedding ceremony rehersals. Allow her to walk down the aisle as much as she needs to feel comfortable (especially since during the real thing there will be hundreds of people staring at her). Also she will be able to handle more responsibilities, she could manage the guest book, assist with the favor making or help the bride and groom pass out the cake.

Also make her hold a basket of rose petals or confetti for other guests to throw at the newly weds after the ceremony.

The flower girls should stand with the bridesmaid at the ceremony and then depart with them. And if a flower girl is too young, assign the duty to the bridesmaid to make her sit with her parents or a guardian when they are done with their walk down the aisle.
